Six years ago, Toronto Independent film Festival (ToIFF) director Steve Veale set out to create a showcase of independent cinema from local, Canadian, and international filmmakers. This event occurs in tandem with the Toronto International Film Festival, a monstrous gathering of movie industry people who seek out films with Hollywood-size budgets. The afternoon of Red Earth Calling's screening at the nine-screen Carlton Cinema, we glimpsed the mayhem as paparazzi broke out in near fist-fights in their attempt to get glamour shots of Drew Barrymore walking the red carpet. ToIFF attracted a more well-behaved crowd of film lovers at the Shorts Block 3 screening on Saturday, September 12th. The block included something for everyone--unrequited love, murder, gangsters, science fiction, and, of course, the beauty of dancing amidst red rocks in Moab, UT.
